Compeer & CompeerCORPS Volunteer Position Description

Volunteer Role: Compeer or CompeerCORPS Volunteer

Location: Delaware County, Pennsylvania [Volunteer role can also be hybrid or fully remote.]

Reports to: Director of Compeer & CompeerCORPS

About Compeer: Compeer is dedicated to connecting adults experiencing mental health challenges with supportive volunteer companions through 1 to 1, same-gender, friendships in the Delaware County, PA area. Our mission is to foster connection, reduce isolation, and encourage greater community involvement and emotional well-being.

About CompeerCORPS: CompeerCORPS is a specialized branch of the Compeer program that serves veterans experiencing mental health challenges by connecting them with supportive veteran volunteers through one-to-one companionship. Because of the shared military experience, all volunteers in the CompeerCORPS program are veterans, helping to foster understanding, trust, and meaningful connection.

Role Overview: Volunteers are responsible for providing consistent one-to-one companionship and supportive friendship to an assigned participant. This includes maintain regular contact, engaging in shared activities (such as phone calls, outings, or virtual meets), offering encouragement, and helping promote social connection and community engagement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • For both programs:
    • Must have personal lived experience with mental health recovery/support
    • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • For CompeerCORPS:
    • Must be a veteran

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Reliable
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Empathetic and nonjudgemental
  • Ability to maintain healthy boundaries
  • Comfortable engaging in ongoing supportive relationships
  • Respect for confidentiality and program guidelines

Time Commitment:

  • Year-long commitment
  • 4 hours of companionship time per month

Reporting Requirement:

  • Submit a monthly report form each month
    • The form is due the month following the reporting period

Training & Support:

  • Required volunteer orientation and training prior to placement
  • Ongoing supervision and support from program staff
  • Access to consultation and guidance as needed throughout the volunteer relationship
